Chapter Eleven

Veronica

“Yes, I’ll find a way to come pick it up. Thank you,” Veronica said into her phone, her ears trained to the conversation. But the rest of her was focused on what was happening inside the diner.

The mechanic on the other end of the line thanked Veronica and hung up.

Veronica had seen a line of people walk into the diner but hadn’t paid much attention because she was on the phone. That had changed when Thatcher moved from the group of elderly men he was chatting with when she left the booth. She’d thought he might be coming to talk to her, but instead, he’d grabbed something from the counter and walked over to a family at another table.

He's helping the waitresses, she thought as he stood there with a pad and pen, talking with the family.

She knew he was the kind of man who would help a stranger out, but he was earning all kinds of brownie points today. He’d told her about his night and how he’d barely slept, that he was tired and grumpy. Yet, he was in there taking orders and carrying coffee to people. The way he’d jumped in to help told her that he’d stay there all night if they needed him.

“Well, he’s just all kinds of surprising, isn’t he, Buster?” she asked the dog as she checked on him again.

Buster looked up at her with adoring eyes laced with sorrow. The poor dog would never pull off a completely happy look, not with that droopy face.

“I’m going to go talk to him, and then I’ll be back out. You keep being a good boy, Buster.” She patted his head before walking back into the diner.

When she’d left the diner to take the call, the place was filled with the sounds of happy customers and people making and eating food. Now, it was filled with the dull roar of voices as they all worked to be heard. Children loudly demanded milkshakes or other treats while their parents tried to get them to calm down and sit in their seats right.

Veronica remembered those days with Oliver, how he’d get so excited about whatever treat he wanted that he’d nearly shake with glee. Those had been precious moments that she knew she’d always remember, even if that awful accident hadn’t happened. She felt guilty now for the times she’d lost patience with him over the years of his life. But there were more happy memories than sad, and that was almost comforting.

Veronica caught sight of Thatcher as he spoke to the waitress after they carried drinks to the table. She moved over to join them, giving the harried-looking waitress a smile. Veronica looked her over and noticed a stain on the woman’s uniform down by her waist—a stain that looked to be the same color as the chili Veronica and Thatcher had eaten.

Veronica looked around at the now-full diner, her heart thumping a little at the noise and the crowd. She was no longer used to being in such busy places, and the sights and sounds were a little intimidating.
